Offerton Methodist Choir
The choir originally formed to help with celebrations of the Church's Centenary year back in 1986. After the cerebrations were over it was decided that it would be a shame to disband and so the choir continued. Its early performances were mainly restricted to church services in and around the local area under the batonship of Mr. Tom Gore.
Since that time the choir has gone from strength to strength and now has a very extensive repertoire including religious, musical, music from the shows and opera. As opposed to most choirs - Offerton tailors its programme to suit the requirements of the occasion and have found this to be a very successful formula.
The choir today is under the directorship of Mrs. Lynda Huston. Having taken over from Tom some years ago. In the last few years the choir has taken to adopting a charity for a period of twelve months and during that time helped to raise monies by special "one off" concerts which usually include special guests, e.g. brass bands, Welsh choirs and so on. This has proved to he very popular and the concerts are a huge success both with guests and audiences alike.
In the short time the choir has been doing this work they have raised quite large sums of money for various charities which include Beechwood Cancer Care, Stockport and East Cheshire Cheshire Cerebral Palsy, BBC Children in Need, HOPE HOUSE, Stepping Hill Scanner appeal, "The Rainbow Family Trust", Cancer Research UK, Bliss, “The British Heart Foundation”plus many others. The nominated charity for this year is “The Alzheimer’s Society”.
The choir members enjoy their singing, the main aim being to give enjoyment to others with their performances which obviously works, as they are a very busy choir and have to restrict engagements to 24 per year!
